“I love historical films and I’m so sick of all these kinds of Jane Austen movies where they have these fucking period movies. How many times do we have to remake fucking Pride and Prejudice? How many times do white people need their history told to them over and over and over again? It’s so fucking boring. It’s always the same. There are enough movies like that. There are enough examinations of white people history. There’s enough of all these novels, all the Bronte sisters, all the fucking Jane Austen bullshit — I don’t care anymore. I’m sick of it. Why can’t we go into other people’s history? Why can’t we go into more Asian history? Why can’t we go into more Asian-American history? Why can’t we go into more Latin-American history? Why can’t we do any of these things? But they don’t. We have to keep regurgitating Old England. It’s so racist, and nobody actually comes out and says this is fucking stupid.”

So many movements in art/literary history are defined solely by a group of friends (usually male, let us not forget, and often white and wealthy) fucking off to the countryside (or whatever enclave best suited them) and doing the art that compelled them, and to hell with what the establishment thought.

What, then, must we make of fannish culture, which is defined by thousands, if not millions of persons (taken in total, over the years) devoting themselves to the act of creating fanworks - including, but not limited to art, fiction, poetry, videos, crafts, earnest metatextual examinations and silly alike - with as little regard for the wholly-arbitrary legal conventions of copyright as the impressionists had for the conventions laid down by the French academic art community?

It is my firm belief that, when history looks back, fandom culture may well register as significantly as Impressionism or any other such cultural movement.

What we must fear, then, is not what the public thinks of us, but the faces in our ranks that the establishment chooses to elevate. E.L. James is our ambassador, as far as outsiders understand - but she capitulated to standards and washed away the roots of her work. So is Cassandra Claire, the writer who initially earned her readers (through means foul or fair, depending on who you ask) in fandom, and carried them with her across the divide between ‘derivative’ and ‘legitimate’ work.

And what, then, have they produced? Romance and YA, both categories easily dismissed. Say what you will about their quality, but those voices that the establishment ‘permits’ within their ranks are also those easily consigned to ‘lesser’ genres. Even Naomi Novik, the patron saint of the OTW, can be dismissed as a ‘fantasy’ writer.

Just so, it becomes that easy to dismiss fanwork itself, if this is the ‘best’ that can be skimmed from our ranks. And lo, with some digging, an enterprising mind can find the infighting within our own ranks about whether these writers ‘deserve’ such canonization by the mainstream, making them all the easier to dismiss as startling aberrations!

I do not argue that romance, or fantasy, or YA lit cannot be as powerful as ‘mainstream’ literature, just that the same establishment that depends on and upholds copyright for its own ends is also the establishment that is in charge of deciding whether or not a piece is considered ‘serious’ literature.

What the reasonable voices among us must do, then, is take advantage of these ‘ambassadors’ as opportunities to engage those around us in conversation about fanwork. Love them or loathe them, they are the fine point behind which we can become the wedge, the lever. And the full weight of the ensuing conversations - the nature of copyright law; DRM; the privilege differential among countries, races, classes, genders in both accessing media and in creating/distributing their own; the dismissal of minority voices when they discuss their own sexuality (see again: the barely-veiled sneering at 50 Shades as ‘mommy porn’); and so on - is staggering once you even begin to unpack it.

Fandom may well got down in the history books: whether as a footnote and a punchline or a cultural revolution is up to us.

That’s the scary bit, innit?

All these countries with fantastic ideas on how to keep these shootings from happening, and we’re still quibbling with a bunch of idiots who have seen all the mass shootings that have happened this year and STILL go “butbutbut I NEED MY GUNS!”

In most instances? No. You don’t.

Honestly? I’d be happy to see that damned second amendment just go away. Let’s make them all illegal except under very few circumstances, and those VERY few people should be under rules just like Japan’s, plus the biometrics ideas put up earlier. (And I don’t really think your everyday police officer should carry them, either. There’s just too much potential for abuse of power. Tasers? Fine. Pepper spray/mace, and/or other nonlethal methods of self-defense? Fine. Give them better armor so they don’t get hurt? Great. But guns (with those very few exceptions) need to go the fuck away.

That’s just my opinion. I don’t pretend to know guns, and I’m fine with that. But you know what I DO know?

TW: Gun violence, suicide

In seventh grade, I had one friend. She and I were pretty inseparable. She had a five year old brother, who was just playing around and chasing his sister, annoying the hell out of her one day. This was in Texas, and I knew a lot of people who had guns. My best friend’s father was no exception.

Her father thought he’d hidden his handgun well enough, in a cabinet, under stacks and stacks of phone books. He also thought the gun was unloaded and all ammo was locked in his room. He was wrong on both counts.

Her five year old brother found it. He thought it was a toy, and he thought it would be funny to chase his sister with. Their parents were out of the house, and her brother aimed the gun at her… And pulled off the one-in-a-million chance that he’d not only shoot correctly, but got off a headshot.

My best friend was dead before the ambulances got to her.

Her parents divorced in grief afterwards, and her brother is no longer alive, either. He didn’t make it through middle school. He killed himself because he couldn’t live with the idea that he’d killed his sister, no matter that it was an innocent mistake.

This, and all of the shootings that have happened this year - from the Dark Knight shooting to the blatant murder of the black family in NC who did nothing wrong but ask some asshole that if he was gonna fire his gun for no reason, to please do it away from their kids - should be made to never happen again.

These kids’ safety should come far before the NRA’s whining about a well-armed citizen militia. The second amendment is not necessary and, frankly, not really valid anymore.

I remember. Mostly, the people in the UK felt that not having things like this happen was a good thing. I wish these massacres would persuade the American voting public of the same thing.

(The UK had 14 Firearm-related murders last year; the US, with a population only 5 times that of the UK, had 9,369. Per this website.)

[Joe here, adding this:] What Neil doesn’t mention is that homicide is just one number. In 2008, the UK only had 68 gun deaths total… that includes suicide and accident. It was around 30,000 in the US. That is quite a pile of dead folk. Something like 400 for every 1 in the UK.
